Music Center in Salzkotten presents – the accordion artworks by Paolo Soprani

Accordion artworks made in Italy by Paolo Soprani

The history of the accordion manufacturing by Paolo Soprani is closely linked to the development of the accordion in Italy and the world. Paolo Soprani, born in 1844 in Castelfidardo, a small town in the Marche region of Italy, is considered the pioneer of Italian accordion production.

The founding of the factory began in the mid-19th century. Paolo Soprani is said to have seen a simple accordion from an Austrian traveler around 1863. Fascinated by this new musical instrument, he decided to build such instruments himself. At first, he made them by hand in a small workshop in his home, supported by his family.

Over time, Soprani and other craftsmen in the region recognized the great potential of the instrument, and thus Castelfidardo developed into the center of Italian accordion production. In the 1870s, Soprani expanded and founded the world's first accordion factory. This was of enormous importance for the spread of the accordion throughout Europe and later worldwide.

The instruments of Paolo Soprani quickly became very popular due to their quality and unique sound. Through constant innovation and improvement of the technology and design of the accordions, the Soprani brand significantly contributed to the development of the modern accordion. At the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, accordion production in Italy experienced a boom, and the Paolo Soprani brand became internationally known.

During the 20th century, the company remained a significant player in the accordion market and produced instruments for many famous accordionists. It became a symbol of quality and craftsmanship.

Today, the tradition of the Paolo Soprani brand continues, and the accordions from the factory are still considered high-quality instruments, appreciated by both amateurs and professional musicians. Castelfidardo remains an important center of accordion manufacturing and hosts museums that honor the history of the accordion and the local manufacturers, including Paolo Soprani.
